As Paul is the computer wizard of the century, he is the designer of micro-hydro electrical load control using a microprocesor - based switching of electrical load to allow:
a) stable system operation at constant frequency and voltage;
b)load management through priority load shedding.
The controller uses an adaptive three-term algorithim within a microprocessor that monitors electrical current and electrical frequency. The algorithm allows rapid response to consumer load changes, whether they are relatively small or large. The response is fed through a series of binary-weighted resistive heaters through sealed electronic solid state relays. The algorithm also protects against conditions in which the consumer load rises above the rated system power available, by automatic switching of pre-selected consumer circuits until balance can be restored.
These micro-hydro installations have been undertaken in Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and rural Victoria, Australia.
The overseas projects were managed by APACE (Appropriate Technology for Commnunity and Environment) and for more details about the work of APACE please visit their home page. APACE
